Program Description
Most of the world’s areas of greatest biodiversity are also home to some of the world’s poorest people. One such area is the eastern Himalayas of northwest Yunnan Province, China. This area, designated a “Global Biodiversity Hotspot” by Conservation International, is the site of a recently established program for long-term research and training collaboration between the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). ii
The program seeks to advance the frontiers of knowledge at the confluence of three forces:
- Ecological factors governing existing and future patterns of biodiversity
- Livelihood strategies and human population dynamics that drive resource exploitation
- Governance structures and policies that impact biodiversity and economic development.
